Red dwarfs
Jul. 22nd, 2010 05:54 pmI’m now 10 light years out from Sol and I’ve already surveyed six red dwarfs. If I were to continue to survey each and every one out to 20 light years, I would have to do over 70 more entries, most of which didn’t have much more to say than “M5V dwarf… [not] a flare star… [not] old enough for life to have evolved on an Earthlike planet.” So I’ll be skipping over the M class stars from here on in, unless there’s something special about one. Still, I think the closest ones deserve a listing of their own.
Nearby (out to 12.5 light years) M-class flare stars:
Ross 248
Ross 128
EZ Aquarii (triple system - at least one flares)
Struve 2398 (binary - B flares)
Groombridge 34 (binary - both flare)
DX Cancri
YZ Ceti
Nearby M-class non-flare stars:
Lacaille 9352 (almost a K class star - good prospect for a habitable world)
GJ 1061
Luyten’s Star
Teegarden’s Star
SCR 1845-6357 (red dwarf with a brown dwarf companion)
