61 Cygni A and B
Jul. 25th, 2010 11:36 amAsimov, Cherryh and Reynolds have all sent people to live in this system, so it’s got to be worth a look.
11.5 light years from Sol. A is a K5V star, B a K7V. Both have reasonably high metallicity (around 80% Sol’s), so they‘re a good bet to have planets. Previous claims to have detected them, though, have turned out to be false alarms. The two stars never come close enough to each other to interfere with the orbits of planets in the life zones. And the stars are older than Sol, so there’s been time for life to develop.
61 Cygni is also known, according to Wikipedia, as “Piazzi’s Flying Star.” Clearly, everyone should call it that all the time.
