Here’s what I could dig up on K stars between 35 and 40 light years from us:

Gliese 653 and 654/Wolf 635: a K5V star with an M3V companion, in Ophiuchus, 35.1 light years away.

Gliese 909/HR 9038: a K3V star with an M2V companion about 50 AU distant, in Cepheus, 35.2 light years away.

Gliese 86 A: a K0V star with at least one planet (Gliese 85 Ab), 4 times or more the size of Jupiter.  In Eridanus, 35.6 light years away.  About two and a half billion years old.  Metallicity about half of Sol’s, which just goes to show that a low score here is not a deal-breaker for planetary formation.  There is also a white dwarf companion, Gliese 86 B, 21 AU distant.  ETA: Bryden et al give an upper age limit of 7.6 billion years.

Gliese 706/HR 6806: a K2V star 36.2 light years away, in Hercules.  About 6-7 billion years old. ETA: Bryden et al give a metallicity around 0.66 that of Sol.

Gliese 27/54 Piscium: a K0V star 36.2 light years away.  A little higher than Sol in metallicity.  Has a planetary companion at least one-fifth the size of Jupiter, and a brown dwarf companion almost 500 AU distant.  Probably around 5-6 billion years old.

Gliese 320: a K2V star 36.3 light years away, in Vela.

Gliese 370: a K5V star 36.4 light years away, also in Vela.

Gliese 505 A: a K2V star with an M1V companion (505 B) at least 14 AU distant, 36.2 light years away, in Coma Berenices.  It is 9.2 light years from Beta Comae Berenices.

Gliese 902: a K3V star 37.2 light years away, in Indus

Gliese 169: a K7V star 37.4 light years away, in Taurus.

Gliese 567: a K2V star 37.6 light years away, in Bootes.

Gliese 542: a K3V or IV star 38.6 light years away, in Centaurus.  It may be evolving off the main sequence and becoming a subgiant.  Metallicity is 180% of Sol’s and the star appears to be about 10 billion years old.

Gliese 309/HR 3384: a K0 star 39.7 light years away, in Pyxis.  ETA: Mamajek and Hildebrand give an age range of 5.7 to 6.5 billion years.  Flynn and Morell give a metallicity of 45% Sol’s.

If you’re interested in creating a pocket empire or two, here are some distances between fairly close stars listed above or in earlier entries:

Gliese 320 to Gliese 309: 6 light years
Gliese 320 to Gliese 370: 8.5 light years
Gliese 309 to Gliese 370: 13 light years

Gliese 902 to Zeta Tucanae: 10 light years
Gliese 902 to Gamma Pavonis: 10 light years
Zeta Tucanae to Gamma Pavonis: 9 light years

Gliese 567 to Gamma Serpentis: 10 light years
Gliese 567 to Lambda Serpentis: 12 light years
Gamma Serpentis to Lambda Serpentis: 6 light years
