Project Icarus
Feb. 19th, 2011 10:19 amThe Daedalus probe discussed yesterday never became a reality, but there is currently a successor proposal in the design stages that uses Daedalus as a starting point. Not surprisingly, this new initiative is known as Project Icarus. The study is not yet completed, but it appears the ship would reach 10 to 20 percent of light speed, which (if you sent it to Barnard’s Star) would mean its arrival in 30 to 60 years.
If this probe ever becomes a reality, let's hope the name Icarus is not too accurate.
